»  1950s Northampton — Street Map

This is a street map that belonged to my father. It was published by the Northampton Chamber of Commerce, probably for placement in local hotels. It is obviously targeted at visiting business and sales people.

The map carries no date. On internal evidence, I would date it as 1959-60. The scale of the printed map is about 6¾ inches to the mile.

I have divided the map into six sections for viewing. To view a section in detail, click on the appropriate thumbnail here.

Note that this map awards the name "River Nene" to the northern tributary coming down through Kingsthorpe. The Ordnance Survey disagrees, giving the name only to the river flowing west-east from the Daventry heights (see here) but no name at all to the northern tributary. I really don't know what the rights and wrongs of this are. Local people, in my recollection, just refer to both indiscriminately as "the river."
