across the kitchen ceiling or put on the wooden clothes horse There would be a huge basket of ironing & even in summer a large fire kept going & irons placed on a bracket to heat, 2-3 irons used at a time. Ironing was Tuesday & took all day. All cooking was done by coal heat, the range polished with black lead & lots of brasses & copper kept bright & shining. Flooring was quarry tiles or lino & rugs hand made with strips of cloth pegged into hessian backing. All water heated with kettles & pans, floors swept with brushes & rugs shaken outside. On the outer wall of our house was a long wide passageway, once used to stable horses, this made a lovely place to play in, in bad weather & I spent many happy hours playing there with Mu & friends all very simple & innocent & cosy. Mother always there, Dad full of humour & so loving, brothers & sisters who all helped the family along. It was expected that all workers contributed to the family purse & helped with the younger members of the family. Nell was my angel, buying school uniform & prettying me up on occasions Win also helped a lot with clothes & bringing
