I was living in Valhalla, New York for the first few months of this year, working for Savin. In early October I returned to England. I lived with my family in Northampton for the rest of this year.

The August 23 letter is the last one of Dad's surviving in my files.

• Birthdays:  My father was 79 in July, my mother 66 in March, my brother Noel was 48 in January, my sister Judith 35 in September. Judith's daughter Tessa was 11 in September; Judith's son Marcus was one year old in January. I was 33 in June.

• Hatched, matched, detached, dispatched:  My bother Noel's older son Robert was married June 18. Philip Moore's father, my sister's father-in-law, died July 19. Dad's sister Polly died in November, aged 83.
