No letters survive from 1980. For the first half of that year I was completing my Chinese studies in Ealing. From September to December I was a part-time lecturer in math, accounting, and computing at Northampton College of Further Education, living at home.

From early February 1981 to Early August I was a systems consultant on contract to Tesco stores, a big supermarket chain in Britain. They were extending their operations to Ireland. I led a project team building the online delivery control system for the Irish stores. I lived for a few months in lodgings near Tesco HQ in Hertfordshire, thereafter in Dublin.

In mid-September I went to New York in hopes (unfulfilled) of getting a book published. I stayed with a friend in Yonkers, returning to England in December.

• Birthdays in 1981:  My father was 82 in July, my mother 69 in March, my brother Noel was 51 in January, my sister Judith 38 in September. Judith's daughter Tessa was 14 in September; Judith's son Marcus was four in January. I was 36 in June.
